All Motorcraft unit packages are labeled with a sequentially numbered UPC bar code. This bar code is used on Motorcraft parts for retail point-of-sale purposes. When queried, the daily updated UPC file can be used to cross-reference the Motorcraft part number with the Ford service part number. A select few high volume oil and ATF products have an additional overpack UPC code; these bar codes are also referenced in the UPC file.
All Ford branded unit packages are labeled with a 3 of 9 bar code. Longer in length than the UPC, this alphanumeric bar code displays the Ford service part number when scanned. The 3 of 9 code, when scanned, displays an asterisk (*) at the beginning and end of the part number. These represent start and stop characters, which simply designate scanning direction and start and stop instructions during scanning. A letter "P" is required at the beginning of the part number. This character defines the general category or use of the data that is encoded in that bar code; in this case, the letter "P" signifies a part number.
The information search will also return the Part/Pkg Length, Part/Pkg Width,
Part/Pkg Depth and the Part/Pkg Weight, I 2 of 5 bar code, country of origin,
overpack length, overpack width, overpack depth, overpack quantity, pallet quantity,
pallet quantity and layer per pallet when available. For tape identified parts
the dimensions are physical part size. For packaged parts, the dimensions are
the outside dimensions of the selling unit package. For example, the majority
of parts are packaged one per unit package. The dimensions are for the outside
unit package size. If a selling unit multiple is involved, then the dimensions
shown are for the selling unit package outside dimensions, such as a 12 piece
filter shipping carton (S012) or spark plug shipping carton (S096).
